Description

This remarkable site is a complex of three tombs excavated in the early 70s, since when over 3000 individual objects have been recovered. The tombs contained three mummies in a remarkable state of preservation. Subsequent investigation revealed that they were the bodies of the Marquis of Dai, his wife and a second male who archeologists believe was their son. The artifacts found in the tombs have helped archeologists understand the Western Han Dynasty and the history of the Hunan Province.

The items found include silk paintings, pottery and one of the largest collections of ancient lacquered goods ever discovered in China, including plates, folding screens, boxes and kettles. There is also a large collection of silks and wooden figurines which have helped archeologists piece together the connection between costume and status in Western Han society. Written items recovered from the tombs include numerous bamboo slips, and also rare silk books inscribed with over one hundred thousand Chinese characters and dealing with ancient philosophy, history, science, technology, medicine and many other subjects.
