Solitary Island (Gu Shan) is in the northwest part of West Lake, not far from the shore and connected to the land by Baidi Causeway and Xi Ling Bridge. Around 20 hectares (50 acres) in area, it is the largest of the Lake's islands, and apart from its peaceful beauty it offers a variety of attractions.
In the southern part of the island lies the Zhejiang Provincial Museum. Not far away are Wen Lan Pavilion and Zhongshan Park, both places for peaceful contemplation. One of Hangzhou's most popular restaurants (the Louwailou) is situated on the island and offers excellent dining in a wonderful setting.
