Description

General Yue Fei (1103-1142) is revered as a great Chinese general and patriot who helped to marshal the Southern Song armies after Jurchen invaders from Manchuria overran northern China. He had many military successes against the Jurchen, pushing them back across the Yangtze and playing a vital role in securing the stability of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). When Yue Fei was on the point of launching a decisive action against the enemy that could have driven them from their capital Kaifeng, officials convinced the Song emperor to recall him. He was then convicted on false charges laid by the corrupt official Qin Hui and executed. He was rehabilitated 20 years later, and his remains were reburied on the site of the Mausoleum. His military strategy and tactics were studied for hundreds of years afterwards, and he is also remembered for his mastery and promotion of two styles of martial arts.

The site is set in spacious grounds on the northern shore of West Lake. Along with paintings and documents in honor of Yue Fei, the site features the statues of four bound figures, the reviled conspirators who brought about Yue Fei's death, now condemned to kneel for eternity.
