Provence is hands down one of the best Western restaurants in Hangzhou. Housed in its own building and surrounded by trees and greenery, this popular French restaurant offers quite a simple, yet delicious menu of taste-bud friendly delights. One aspect of Provence that really stands out is their use of fresh, seasonal produce which means that unlike many other restaurants' static menus, this one alternates according to the ingredients' availability. However, their classic dishes such as Escaorgot Burgundy style and mouth watering desserts such as the Crème Br?lée are reliable fixtures on their sumptuous menu. Another strong feature of this French restaurant is its extensive wine list that includes over 100 carefully selected wines from around the world. Finally, the restaurant also possesses a downstairs bar that stocks a good range of Cognacs, Armagnacs, aged Caribbean rums and Illy cafe for an after-dinner round of digestifs.
Soups:
Mushroom creamy soup was very good with tasty mushrooms. The tomato soup with mozzarella cheese was tangy, but not overpowering.
Main Entrée:
The Sea Bass was served as a breaded fillet with some vegetables.
The Pork tenderloin had a good, tangy sauce and the meat was very tender.
Drink: French Martini
This had a very good taste using gin, pineapple juice, and raspberry syrup. Deceptively potent, but not too strong…
Additional comments:
There were many people in the downstairs lounge area enjoying evening cocktails. The manager, Antoine Gerard, was very polite, friendly and showed genuine interest that my wife and I were enjoying our meal at Provence.
One suggestion I would make for a patron would be to arrive early for dinner. My wife and I arrived after 8:00 so the restaurant did not have any salad choices remaining and we were not able to try the pumpkin soup we wanted. Another suggestion for the restaurant would be to create a little more of an authentic French atmosphere with the décor and maybe some French café style music playing in the background.
Overall this was a fair dining experience for western food in Hangzhou.
