Built to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to China, Xinghai Square is located in the western part of Dalian, in the Xinghai Business District. The square's design is influenced by ancient Chinese beliefs and nationalistic connotations. It is also surrounded by a number of foreign-looking buildings.
One of its most impressive structures is a great white marble cloud pillar erected to mark the return of Hong Kong in 1997. Located near the Square is the Xinghai Exhibition Center, venue for many of Dalian's exhibitions including the International Fashion Festival, the International Beer Festival and the Spring Festival Firework and Firecracker show.
