Description

Zhejiang Provincial Museum, situated on Solitary Island in West Lake, is one of China's oldest museums. Currently, it holds over 100,000 objects of historical and cultural significance, with a special emphasis on the history of Zhejiang.

One of the museum's most important collections is displayed in the Celadon Hall. Zhejiang was a vital center for the production of celadon porcelain, which reached its zenith with the production of longquan celadon in Hangzhou during the Southern Song dynasty. The History and Cultural Relics Hall displays objects from periods important to the history of Zhejiang, beginning with wooden, bone and ivory objects from the Neolithic Hemudu culture and jade articles and silk fabrics from the Liangzhu culture (3400-2250 BC), and going forward through the Yue and Wuyue States to the Northern and Southern Song dynasties, and finally to events in the modern era.

Other important sections of the museum are the Coin Gallery, which reflects the development of currency in China, the Arts and Crafts Gallery, showcasing Zhejiang's achievements in handicrafts and art from the earliest times to the modern day, and the Painting and Calligraphy Gallery.
