The China Yiwu International Commodities Fair started in 1995 and has been held eleven times. In 2002, the "Yiwu Commodities Fair" was upgraded to an international commodities fair and was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, the People's Government of Zhejiang province, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the China National Light Industry Council and the China General Chamber of Commerce jointly.
Due to its distinct features, prominent internationalization, convenient information access and perfected service system, as well as sound security and sanitation, the Yiwu Fair ranks No.3, only after the Canton Fair and East China Fair. It is the biggest and the most efficient fair for general merchandise in the country.
As the leader of the exhibition industry in Yiwu, the China Yiwu International Commodities Fair in 2006 has made new breakthroughs in terms of exhibition scale, trading amount and participants. The exhibition area was 90,000 square meters. There were 4,000 international standard exhibition booths with over 2,000 participating enterprises. It realized a trading volume of 9.45 billion RMB including US$780 million of foreign trade transactions. 105,000 people participated in the fair including 16,000 foreign merchants from 161 nations and regions such as South Korea, Japan and the US. The exhibition covered 12 areas including cultural, education, office supplies, articles, sports and leisure articles, toys, textiles, hats and shoes, cosmetics, daily use articles, electronics and electrical appliances, bags, ornaments and fittings, craftwork gifts, household articles and network information.
The online Yiwu International Commodities Fair is receiving more and more attention from merchants home and abroad with growing access from clients. In 2006 during the Yiwu International Commodities Fair, the amount of access was 393,758 person times, over 78,000 person times each day, up by 13.7% from the previous year.
