The Shanjuan Caves were used between 722 and 481 BC by the Shanjuan tribe after which they were named, who lived here during spring and autumn
The cave system is split into three levels, the lowest two of which are open to the public. In the first cave a number of poems from ten Tang Dynasty poets are painted onto the walls. Huge stalactites (some of which drop as low as 7 meters from the cave ceiling) have formed in the next cave, known as the ''Warm Cave'' as it has a permanent temperature of 23C. The Waterfall Cave is the starting point of a 120 meter waterfall, which crashes from the cave into the river below. The cave leads down to the lowest of the three caves, from where visitors can catch a boat to the Back Cave.
The caves are located 25 kilometers south of Yixing in Luoyan Hill.
