The Urumqi Arboretum is dedicated to the study and conservation of various rare or protected, wild and ornamental plants from Xinjiang. It covers an area of 60.61 hectares (150 acres) and has several sub-gardens such as the China rose garden, the fruit tree area and the perennial flower area which has over 40 varieties of herbaceous peony and 200 varieties of chrysanthemum.
From September to October each year, it holds an annual '' Chrysanthemum Expo'' , exhibiting 1,000 varieties of chrysanthemums.
