Southern Mosque is the centre for Islamic worship in Urumqi, accommodating around 1,100 worshippers. It was built in 1919 and thanks to frequent renovation, it is in wonderful condition. The minaret and bathing pool are particularly eye-catching, but the prayer hall is perhaps the finest feature of this structure. The roof is covered with glazed tiles and 22 flying dragons carved into the ridge. The walls of the corridors are painted with vivid and colorful depictions of orchids, bamboo and water lilies.
