Originally known as "Qingxiu Mosque", the first incarnation of Taiyuan Ancient Mosque was erected during the Tang Dynasty Unlike so many other religious structures in China that have undergone reconstruction during the last 100 years or so, Taiyuan Ancient Mosque was last renovated during the Ming Dynasty . It was built in such a way that "no timber can be seen from the outside, and no bricks can be seen while inside".
