Situated at the heart of Shenyang, Zhongshan Square was built to celebrate and memorialize Chairman Mao, the father of modern China, and is dominated by a 10-meter statue of him. The statue is surrounded by further figures, depicting students, peasants and soldiers all waving their copy of Mao's most famous work: the Red Book.
The square is a lively focal point for much of the Shenyang's culture and entertainment. The square hosts musical events and soccer matches, is a meeting place for artists and calligraphers and provides a rehearsal space for dancers and musicians.
