Yu Fo Temple, Jade Buddha Temple, an active Zen Buddhist monastery, is the most famous Buddhist temple in Shanghai. The temple houses two beautiful white jade Buddhas, one sitting and one reclining, impressively carved out of single slabs of jade. The monk Huigeng brought the Buddhas back from Burma in 1882, and the following year the temple was constructed to house the sculptures. In 1918, the temple was reconstructed according to the Song Dynasty architectural style, with its characteristic curling eaves.
