Description

The ''Book City of South China'' - Tianyi Pavilion Library - was built on the side of Yuehu Lake by the Ming Dynasty official Fan Qin, (whose status was something similar to that of a National Defense Minister today) to house one of the largest private libraries in China. Its unique design and cultural importance earned it status as a protected site by the Chinese government and the documents it contains encompasses texts on social studies, history and art. The library's collection holds over 300,000 ancient books, over 80,000 of which are particularly rare.

The site of the Tianyi Pavilion Library also includes the Eastern Garden, the ancestral hall of Fan Qin, the Calligraphy and Painting Hall, and a hall dedicated to local chronicles.
