South China Botanical Garden has the primary functions of collecting, introducing, acclimatizing and studying tropical and subtropical plants. While the Garden's association with the Chinese Academy of Sciences gives it vital scientific purposes, it is also a very popular recreation spot for Guangzhou locals, especially the area around the man-made lake. The garden has 5,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from home and abroad; hence, locals like to call it, the "museum of tropical and subtropical plants".
