Chongqing General Ba Food Culture Development Co., Ltd. opened the first General Ba Hotpot in 2000. General Ba has since enjoyed exponential expansion into a chain restaurant boasting 160-odd franchises in 20 provinces. The restaurant is named after the legendary general Ba Manzi of the Warring States Period. Towards the end of the Zhou Dynasty, the Ba Kingdom was in a state of civil war, and Ba Manzi was sent to the Kingdom of Chu to beg military assistance to put down the rebellion. Chu agreed, but at the cost of three Ba cities. Once the rebels were under control, Chu demanded his price. In order to secure his liege lord's holdings, Ba Manzi offered his own head in liu of the cities, and committed suicide. Chu was impressed by his loyalty, and ordered that his head be buried with full honors.
