The Chengdu Zoo is unlike any other in China. It is on the United Nations list of the 500 most humane zoos in the world, which sets it apart from the vast majority of institutions visitors are likely to come across.
The highlight of the zoo is the panda accommodation, shaded by bamboo, encompassing pools and pretty wooded areas. These wonderful enclosures have been designed to most comfortably replicate the natural environments of both Greater and Lesser Pandas which are studied and bred here.
The zoo also focuses on collecting and preserving animals native to the Sichuan region, and has good collections of over 180 species, including golden monkey and jinsihou. The zoo also has nearly 200 species of bird, held in several giant aviaries.
