Description

Zhuge Liang was a statesman, engineer, inventor and military strategist living in the Three Kingdoms Era. During his lifetime he was nicknamed Crouching Dragon, as even those close to him failed to truly understand the depth and breath of his talents. His unusual two-syllable family name – Zhuge – is even now still synonymous with intelligence and astuteness in China. Zhuge served as a military and political advisor to the Emperor Liu Bei, who was so impressed with his abilities that he urged Zhuge to succeed him on the throne if Liu Bei's son proved incapable. By the time of his death, Zhuge was already revered across the country for his intelligence and noble character. After his death, temples were built to honor his memory, including the Wuhou Memorial Temple.

Wuhou Memorial Temple is an excellent example of traditional Chinese temple building, built on a north-south axis, and with a series of halls connected by courtyards, filled with sculpture and decorated pavilions. Sculptures of Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei rub shoulders with other important figures from the Three Kingdom Era, a few relics supposedly owned by Zhuge and examples of his calligraphy.
