SALT

Description

A 2007 newcomer from the same stable as the wildly successful Alameda, SALT offers an unbeatable formula: it's all about the food. If you want to spend the night cooing about the décor, go somewhere else. The SALT environment isn't showy, it's clean and functional - the money's gone into the food. The large dining room is set around an open kitchen which produces boldly contemporary Euro cuisine as good as anything in Beijing (try the Goat Cheese Panna Cotta with Pear Confit and Basil Foam). Ordering is easy: choose from prix fixe menus (two courses or three). Lunch RMB 78 or 98, dinner RMB 148 or 168. The wine list (Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Argentina) is short but nicely balanced. The only minus - the menu is in English only. Why?

Pricey, but a nice break from the usual stuff. Good food, professional service, good setting, and the water (which is filtered I believe) is especially tasty. If it's too posh or expensive then you can just get smashed at Frank's Place downstairs.
