Description

The National Library of China is situated in the western part of Beijing, and serves the central government, key research institutions, the business community, and the general public. By the end of 2003, the Library boasted a collection of 24.11 million volumes/items, and ranked fifth among the largest libraries of the world. The collection includes 270,000 volumes of rare books, 1.6 million volumes of general ancient books, and 35,000 pieces of the scripted turtle shells and animal bones. The Library not only has the largest collection of Chinese books in the world, but also the biggest collection of materials in foreign languages found in China. It also has a large collection of important manuscripts, historical materials related to the Revolution, Chinese doctoral dissertations, UN publications, and e-publications. The Library is open to the public 365 days a year with 24-hour online service linked to various networks. An academic bookstore is part of the library complex.
