On the north shore of Houhai lake is a Qing Dynasty-era estate set in a beautiful formal garden that served as the residence of comrade Soong Ching Ling, wife of the founder of modern China, Dr. Sun Yatsen. After her husband's death, she opted to side with the Communist in the Chinese Civil War. She is credited with founding China Defense League, which later became China Welfare Institute. After 1949, she became Vice Chair of the People's Republic of China. Prior to her death, she was admitted to the Communist Party and named Honorary President of the People's Republic of China.
After her passing, the residence became a museum served as a window into her life exhibiting gifts, pictures, photos, letters, scripts and some of Sun Yat-sen's belongings.
