Description

12 kilometers to the north of downtown Zhengzhou are the ancient ruins of Dahecun Village, a 400,000 square meter site which was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic age, when the Yangshao people lived in the area. After the Yangshao, the other ancient cultures established settlements in the area: the Longshan, the Xia and the Shang. It is one of the largest settlements found dating from this time period: indications are that up to 500 people lived in the village. 250 graves, 6 kilns, 2 stables and several homes have been excavated, the finds from which point toward a matriarchal society based on agriculture. 200 cellars and underground caves have also been found, many of which had fossilized food in them, leading to the conclusion that they were used to store food for sustenance through the winter months.
