As its name implies, Sand Lake a place to experience both water & desert 56 kilometers north of Yinchuan. Sand Lake covers an area in excess of 80 square kilometers, over half of which is made up of lakes, with the rest predominantly being desert. A place of blue sky & golden sand dotted with lotus plants and unusual wildlife, Sand Lake is a picture of peace and beauty barely an hour from Yinchuan City.
Local wildlife around the lake is undoubtedly as beautiful as the unusual scenery. Twitchers come here from all over China to enjoy being amongst an estimated one million migratory birds during the spring and autumn seasons. White cranes, black cranes, red-crowned cranes, swans, wild ducks and mandarin ducks are all found around the lake, and bird-watchers are encouraged to make use of the Bird-watching Tower which is large enough to hold several hundred ornithological enthusiasts. The lake also holds an array of fish, ranging from an extensive list of carp species to the rare blunt-snout bream which in turn attracts giant salamanders to the area
Visitors after a more energetic experience can take a motorboat or a windsurfer out on the lake, go dune-sliding or try one of the other 30 water & desert sports on offer around Sand Lake.
