Tibetan carpet-making has a history of over 600 years. With its unique weaving style, Tibetan carpets have bright and harmonious colors, which do not fade after being washed. They are also durable, and praised for their exquisite technique and beauty. Among all the Tibetan carpets, Gyangze carpets enjoy the highest reputation. In addition, carpets produced in Lhasa, Konggar, Nanggarze, Nangxian, Dengqen and Chagyab are all highly respected.
The Qinghai Tibetan Carpet International Exhibition, sponsored by the governments of Qinghai Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region and the China Chamber of Commerce for Import/Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-products is held every year in Xining. The Exhibition attracts exhibitors from home and abroad. Competitive domestic wholesalers are also invited. Exhibitors are requested to showcase not only the traditional hand-made carpets but also machine-made carpets, brand-name curtains and bedding. Qinghai held its first Tibetan carpets international exhibition in September 2004, promoting the Tibetan carpet industry. Enterprises and guests come mainly from eight countries including Pakistan, India, Nepal, Mongolia, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Japan.
