The Banpo Museum is located in the eastern outskirts of Xi'an City, and is the first museum constructed at the prehistoric Banpo archeological site. Originally inaugurated in 1958, the museum boasts over 4500 exhibits, and has attracted over two million visitors since it first opened its doors. The exhibit area of Banpo Museum is divided into two Exhibition Halls and a Site Hall. This institution exhibit is dedicated to the Banpo (5000 B.C.–4000 B.C.) of the Yangshao Culture which has been classified as a matriarchal community that lived during the Neolithic Era that used tools made primarily of wood and stone. The first Exhibition Hall displays unearthed relics from the archeological site primarily subsistence tools and many domestic tools. Additionally, artwork and adornments are exhibited in order to give one the social, cultural dimensions of the Banpo People. The second Exhibition Hall primarily exhibits ethnological studies, folklore and historical art related to this prehistoric culture. The Site Hall is about 3,000 square meters and has specialized exhibits including residential, pottery making and burial section; among the three, the residential section is the main part of the exhibit, which include the huts, kilns and tombs of the primitive residents. The museum also exhibits a traditional 'Banpo Matriarchal Clan Community Village', which is considered an extension of the museum based on archeological findings.
