Description

Da Ci'en Temple is part of a complex that includes Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Originally Da Ci'en, Mercy and Kindness, was built in 648 to commemorate the death of Empress Wende. During its time, the temple exceeded the grandeur and fame of many temples, but with time, its size and fame has been reduced.

The temple grounds are beautifully adorned with shady trees, aromatic flowers, and commanding lion statues and tranquil elephant statues. The temple is the home of a number of halls including the Hall of Mahavira, Sermon Hall, and the Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang. Nevertheless, its most impressive building is Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Originally, the temple's halls had various roles, but now, the halls display an array of relics and bronze statues of the time. The beauty of the temple is its highly decorated walls, chiseled with murals depicting Buddhist stories, and legends.
