Bailin Buddhist Temple lies in the southeast of Zhaoxian County, 30 kilometers away from Shijiazhuang. Originally, it was built during the Eastern Han Dynasty; however, during the Song Dynasty, it was named "Yong'an Temple". During the Yuan Dynasty, the name "Bailin Buddhist Temple" appeared in an imperial decree. During that time, the temple grounds were covered with many cypresses hence it was renamed "Bailin" (meaning cypress woods).
In ancient times. Bailin Buddhist Temple was the Buddhist center of the state of Yan and Zhao. Before going to study in India, Sanzang, a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty, studied here for more than one year. There were many eminent monks that studied in Bailin Buddhist Temple. Zhaozhou Chan Master (an honorary title for a Buddhist monk) from the Tang Dynasty, Guiyun Old Man from the Song Dynasty, Yuexi Chan Master and Luyun Chan Master from the Yuan Dynasty studied here. Zhaozhou Chan Master is a master, remarkable and influential both in the past and at present, and well known inside and outside China. Today, Bailin Buddhist Temple has taken a new look and is under the guidance of Jinghui Chan Master. Each year in July, Shenhuo Zen Summer Camp attracts students and lay Buddhist from China and the rest of the world to come to sightsee and study. Now, Bailin Buddhist Temple has become a tourist attraction encompassing sightseeing, worshiping and vacationing.
