Description

Since opening its gates on May 1, 1988, Fairy Lake Botanical Garden has received over 500 million foreign and domestic visitors curious to glimpse the flora native to southern China. Fairy Lake’s 590 hectares contain more than 3,000 different species of plants and are organized into nine different themed sections, with six more to follow in coming years. A nice place to spend time is the “shade section”, which has more than 1,000 species of shade plant and is a great place to get away from the constant activity of Luohu. The Petrified Forest is also a nice place to relax.
Fairy Lake is about more than just chilling out, though, and is also an important centre of research in China. This makes sense, as there are not many places in the world where you can observe over 60 species of ornamental bamboo or nearly 200 rare or endangered plants. A highlight, at least for Chinese visitors, is the tree planted by Deng Xiaoping during a visit to Shenzhen; Deng is celebrated in Shenzhen because he initiated the reform and opening up in China, which has made Shenzhen such an economic success. The city’s largest Buddhist temple, Hong Fa Temple, can be found here - not that there is a lot of competition in Shenzhen for that title.
