The museum, also known as Hehu New Residence, is one of the best-preserved Hakka-style residential buildings. It is also the largest and best-preserved group of Hakka dwellings. Longgang Hakka Folk-custom Museum sits in Luoruihe Village in Longgang District, 28 km from Shenzhen's city center. Built in 1817, the residential area covers an area of 24,816 sqm. It is said the construction took a total of three generations and several decades before completion.
The residential area was constructed during the rule of Qing Emperor Hongli (1736-1796). The fortress like construction was begun by Luo Ruifeng, a Hakka from Xingning in eastern Guangdong Province. From afar, the complex resembles a mini 'Forbidden City' because of the 165.9 meters protective wall made out of mud, sand, and lime. The complex is comprised of three central structures and two horizontal houses, partitioned by walls. Numerous houses, halls, room are within.
According to records, the first generation of the Luos in Longgang built an inner wall; four guard towers, and a watchtower. Subsequent generations built the outer walls, another four guard towers, and a watchtower extending the compound.
The museum is comprised of 179 residences with every compound containing multiple rooms -each display particular aspects of the Hakka people's lifestyle.
