When the Ming dynastyended with the suicide of the last emperor, Bada Shanren, the descendant of a Ming noble family, took refuge in a Buddhist temple. He continued painting and writing as a monk.

The former residence of Bada Shanren in the south of Nanchang was constructed during the Western Han Dynasty. It is a wonderful example of a courtyard house, and is now home to exhibitions of Bada Shanren's calligraphy, paintings and poems.
