The main feature of the park is the Dragon King Pool, one of the main scenic spots of Potala Palace area. The pool was formed during the time of the fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682), after earth was removed from the site for the construction of the White Hall of the Potala Palace by the fifth Dalai Lama. According to tradition, the sixth Dalai Lama (1683-1706) invited eight dragons to live there, hence the name. In the 1950s, the government renovated the park and built facilities such as a children's park, and planted trees, flowers and lawn. The park now is a popular recreation spot, and is also called Liberation Park (Jiefang Gongyuan).
