Description

Namtso Lake is one of the most beautiful spots in Tibet, famed for its turquoise water and majestic mountain scenery. Apart from its scenic qualities, the lake is of great spiritual importance to Tibetans. The name means "Heavenly Lake", the Tashi Dor monastery stands on the shore, and many pilgrims visit each year, most to make the clockwise devotional circuit of the lake, and some to make a spiritual retreat on one of the islands in its center.

Namtso is the second-largest saltwater lake in China after Qinghai Hu, and, at an altitude of 4720m (15,486 feet), is the second-highest saltwater lake in the world after Sengli Lake in western Tibet. The lake is fed by rainfall and snow-melt from the surrounding mountains, and is a haven for migratory birds and wild animals.

Note: Travelers should be cautious about this trip because of the high altitude. Make sure you have spent plenty of time in Lhasa to acclimatize before making the trip. Read the advice on acute mountain sickness in Travel Tips. Consult your doctor if in doubt. Bring plenty of water and wear warm clothes and stout shoes.

Getting there: There are no direct buses to Namtso Lake. The best way is to hire a taxi or a mini bus from Lhasa.
