Description

The Shentong Temple is perhaps most well known for the 'Four Door Pagoda' , which lies on its grounds, and is the oldest surviving one-storey stone tower in China, originally constructed in 661. The pagoda houses four sixth-century Buddhas, and there is a cypress tree next to it that dates back over 1000 years. The temple itself was built in 351, by a monk named Seng Lang, and it was given the name Shentong during the Sui Dynasty, by the emperor Suiwen. Nearby Qinglong Mountain is also home to a number of interesting sites, such as the 'Little Song Pagoda' , built over 900 years ago. UNESCO has recognized the Shentong Temple and the grounds as sites of high historical value.
