Opened in 2006 the Daqingshan Wild-Animal Zoo is located in a northern suburb of Hohhot. The Zoo is split into 15 areas including the herbivore area, an aquatic animal area, the carnivorous animal area, an area for boars and wolves as well as a picnic area. There is also an area where trained wild animals perform which may make some Westerners uncomfortable, but is extremely popular. The Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals including panthers, alpaca and guanaco.
The Zoo lies in a lush mountainous landscape and features elaborate lakes, waterfalls, forests and hills. The features within the park have been sculpted into such areas as macaque hill, wolf canyon, lion mountain and water fowl lake. Visitors can hire golf-buggies to get around selected areas including the small animal area and the herbivore area where they can pet and feed the tame residents.
