Description

This is considered one of the better of the two main sights. Although, Mao's former home does not look that different from some of the present farmhouses in Hunan and Sichuan, this site is considered rich for its historical relevance. This site is on the outskirts of Shaoshan (approximately 104 km outside of Changsha) and is easily reached by bus.

The Spartan but attractive brick buildings with curved wooden shingles have signs in Chinese and English that identify each room and contain a variety of intriguing artifacts, such as a large wok in the kitchen, grain-milling bowls, and kitchen equipment and wonderful photos of Mao's family gracing the walls and much more. Unlike many traditional Chinese homes, the barn was built to be part of the house making Zetan's room, Mao's brother, next to the pigpen.

Bus Route: a tour bus travels from Changsha's South Station and Shaoshan to the site every half an hour (from 8 am - 5 pm). Travelers interested in visiting the site, can travel to this destination for a mere RMB 20. It is advised that the ride will last approximately 1 hr. 40 min. Upon arrival to Shaoshan Bus Station, travelers will continue to his home via bus (RMB 1) or by motorcycle (RMB 5).
