Description

In 1929, an almost complete fossilized skull cap of a new species of Homo Erectus was found at Zhoukoudian near Beijing. Dubbed Peking Man in the West, this species electrified the scientific world because it was obviously tool-using and organized and so provided a direct evolutionary line of descent from more primitive species to Homo Sapiens. Other equally important discoveries followed in the same region, which is still under excavation today.

The Zhoukoudian Relics Museum houses models of the Peking Man skulls as well as other related finds, and has educational displays on the significance of the Zhoukoudian discoveries.
