  • Getting there: Opposite Mega Mega Vintage on Gulou Dongdajie and in the same compound as Dada, look out for a Chinese arch with what looks like a parking lot and buildings inside. Walk in, look for the sign "B202", and go up the stairs.

Description

Not to be confused with the uber-swanky Contempio Temple Bar, Temple Bar is a popular live music space just off Gulou Dongdajie. There are free rock shows regularly, as well as bigger gigs. Tends to get very crowded (and smokey) on the weekends.

Temple is really popular because it's the only proper rock bar in the Gulou area. Mao doesn't count because you don't go there to hang out, you just go there to watch a gig. Compared to most other bars in the area, Temple is actually quite roomy and a big draw is the fact that they offer quite a lot of free gigs. However, it can get extremely smokey there when it's crowded and I have wondered about fire safety while there once or twice. Bad things aside, it's a great place to hangout, grab a few cheap drinks and listen to a rock/indie soundtrack.
