Description

Thanks to a large Hui (Chinese Muslim) population, there are an estimated 2000 mosques in the Ningxia Province: Nanguan is undoubtedly one of the most famous. The current incarnation of the Nanguan Mosque was built in the 1980's to replace the original Ming Dynasty.

building, which was destroyed 20 years earlier during the Cultural Revolution. It now sits on an area of about half an acre in the southeast corner of Yinchuan's old city. It is built in a traditional Islamic architectural style: the classic five domes atop the building representing Mohammed and four significant Imams. The prayer hall holds around 1000 worshippers and there are quarters on the first floor for imams currently living in the Mosque.

The Bangke towers are more recent additions to the building. They were constructed in the 1990s to aid the call to prayer.
