Description

Covering an area of around 11,940 square meters, the Dongguan Mosque, situated in Xining's City Zone, is one of the most impressive and certainly the most famous of all the mosques in northwest China.

Built over 600 years ago in 1380, the Dongguan Mosque boasts magnificent architectural features: a combination of Chinese art and traditional Islamic features make this building truly unique. Entering through an elegant arched gateway, one immediately sees the hexagonal green towers of the Xuanli Lou (Xuanli Pavilions) from where Imams make the call to prayer. Dongguan is a working mosque and significant as a religious education center for Moslems in the area.

The open-air prayer hall covers an area of 1,136 square meters and can hold more than 3,000 worshippers. During major Islamic festivals, tens of thousands of worshippers make their way to the mosque, to participate in the ceremonies, and the entire surrounding area takes on a festive atmosphere.
