Description

Xuanmiaoguan, Suzhou's Temple of Mystery, is a Taoist temple that was first laid out in the 3rd century AD. Located in busy Guanqian St, it offers a tranquil refuge from the commercial bustle of the city. The most important hall in the temple is Sanqing Dian, which dates from the 12th century and was extensively renovated in the 19th century. The hall is dedicated to the major gods of Taoism including Taishang Laojun and features statues over 17 meters (56 feet) high, which are replicas of Song dynasty originals. The temple also has a collection of Song dynasty stone carvings and Tang dynasty calligraphy.
