This famous and historic street is located in the Hongkou District of Shanghai near to Luxun Park. It has the best examples of ''old'' Shanghai's European villas and mansions. The street began to prosper around the end of the 19th century. By the 1930s, a great number of great literary masters like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Guo Moruo had made it their home.
Famous buildings on the street include the Uchiyama Bookshop and the Hengfeng Tea Shop. The tea shop was known as ''Celebrity Teahouse'' because of the number of famous clientele it drew.
Though the writers and poets are long gone, the road has been restored to its 1930s look. It has art and antique shops and galleries, old-fashioned lamps and bronze statues of its most famous literary masters. Some of the famous residences have been transformed into cafés, and there many museums, and exhibition halls that reflect the culture of Shanghai.
Shops sell the traditional Chinese qipao and changshan (formal gowns), snack vendors abound, and visitors can pick up some interesting curios and handicrafts at various shops that dot both sides of the street.
