THE PEARL is named in honor of The Pearl Garden (Liyuan), the first known royal acting and music academy in China founded 1300 years ago during the Tang Dynasty, also known as; “The Age of 1000 Entertainers”
THE PEARL is located only a few minutes from the Bund at 471 Zhapu Road, a Hongkou historical landmark building built in 1931. Originally a Buddhist temple, the interior has been transformed into a three-floor 1930’s retro style cabaret full of sophistication and charm. This area was the first international center for theatre and entertainment in Shanghai; The Pearl venue brings back a era of excitement and glamour back to this once legendary neighborhood.
THE PEARL is a one of a kind 3 story theatre style venue featuring a large main floor, a second floor with private viewing boxes, a third floor private lounge with an exclusive view, as well as a proscenium show room stage. We also have a state of the art sound system custom designed by Sennheiser and a professional compliment of theatrical lighting allowing us to fulfill all of your private event, performance and production needs.
