Description

The tragic love story of Liang-Zhu has been told since the Eastern Jin Dynasty, when a beautiful young woman, named Zhuyingtai (Zhu) was pressured by her wealthy family to find a suitable husband. After refusing all the suitors her family found, she persuaded her father to send her away to school and despite the fact that schools were reserved for boys, her father agreed, allowing her to attend, dressed in boy's clothes. Whilst at the school, Zhu fell deeply in love with Liangshanbo (Liang) a kind, suitable boy, but hearing that her father was ill and near to death, Zhu had to return home. After Zhu's departure, Liang realized he was deeply in love with her: filled with longing, Liang died a month later. Meanwhile Zhu had found out that her father was not ill at all: her sudden summoning was merely a trick to bring her home and force her into marriage. Hearing of Liang's death, Zhu was heartbroken. Determined to be reunited with her lost love, she fled the bridal procession as it passed Liang's grave and leapt in. At that moment, two beautiful butterflies flew up from the grave, which onlookers said were the sprits of the reunited lovers. Since then, butterflies have symbolized love in the region.

The Liang-Zhu Cultural Park was constructed around the Liang Shanbo Temple and Liang-Zhu Tomb to honor this couple. Lying on the Yao River, the park is dotted with pavilions, terraces and mansions with planted gardens and pretty scenery.
