Description

Zhanyuan Garden is one of the five most famous gardens of Southern China and the only well preserved Ming dynasty architectural complex in Nanjing. Its name was given to it by the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty. During the Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864), it became the residence of three of the leaders of the uprising - Yang Xiuqing, Xiao Youhe and Lai Hanying. After years of neglect it was renovated in 1960. It exhibits relics from the Taiping Rebellion including the robe of the ''Heavenly King'' (the leader of the rebel state), the flag and a typical sword of the army, and a garden. The garden is landscaped in the traditional Ming Dynasty style, including rockeries, ponds and pavilions.
