Description

Jinggang Mountain is located about 350 kilometers from Nanchang, on the border of Hunan Province. It is known for its waterfalls including the magnificent Bailongtan Waterfall which has an 82-meter drop and several others which fall around 30 meters into beautiful pools, including the Longtan Waterfall which drops into the Green Jade Pond, Lock-Dragon Waterfall which feeds the Five-Dragon Pond and the Pearl Waterfall Dragon-Pond at the bottom of which is the Golden-Lock Pond. Of the numerous peaks along the mountain range, Five-Fingers Peak (Wuzhi Peak) is the highest, where bobtail monkeys play along the unusual rock formation which looks like five extended fingers. There is a sightseeing platform across from the peak, where visitors may enjoy the magnificent views.

The mountain was used as a retreat for Communist troops after the Nanchang Uprising, and is known as the birthplace of the Red Army, as Mao consolidated and reorganized his troops here.

Huangyang Jie's Monument has two steles, carved with inscriptions by Chairman Mao and Zhu De and the Up-Well (Shangjing) Red Army Mint which played an important role during the Chinese Revolution. The city of Ciping is also a great place to learn about the Chinese Revolution, and was used as a revolutionary base. There is also the Mt. Jinggang Revolution Museum, the Tower of the Revolutionary Martyrs and military statues

However, those not interested in having too many history lessons should come to Pen-Rack-Mountain (Mt. Bijia) famed for the steep peaks, unique rock formations, old pines, sea of clouds, breathtaking sunrise and the 5-kilometer (about 3.1 miles) patch of rhododendrons, which displays its aromatic blooms in the spring (March - April).

Getting there: a bus leaves Nanchang Long Distance Bus Station for Jinggang Mountain around 10 times a day, though there are routes from Ji'an City too.
