Giant Pandas are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. As of 2006, there were fewer than 1000 in the wild, of which 80% are found in Sichuan.
The Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Center is located about 10 km outside the city. The center was established in 1993 in order to save pandas from extinction. The research center was built to imitate the pandas' natural habitat, forested with tasty bamboo as well as enclosures for the pandas to get plenty of exercise. Aside from being a panda breeding and research center, the center cares for other rare and endangered wild animals.
The center is comprised of three main exhibitions including the Giant Panda Hall, the Butterfly Hall and the Vertebrate Hall. The specialized exhibits include beautiful pictures taken both at the center and in the bamboo forests where the pandas reside. In addition to fossil exhibits, the center also houses live animals including lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks and over 20 species of rare animals nurtured and bred at this animal conservation center.
A fun place to spend a day out with the kids.
