Description

Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was a renowned Chinese painter and art educator revered as a pioneer in the fusion of Western and Chinese painting styles. Through his art and as the foundation President of the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts, he had a profound effect on the development of 20th-century Chinese painting. He worked with great success in both oils and Chinese ink, and is best remembered for his use of ink painting to explore Western approaches to perspective and composition. Among his most famous works are portrayals of animals, particularly horses and birds.

The Xu Beihong Museum contains his entire personal collection of books, calligraphy and paintings (both his own and works from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties). The collection includes a painting by the Tang dynasty master Wu Daozi entitled "Eighty-seven Immortals", which Xu Beihong purchased in Hong Kong in 1938. Also on display is a large quantity of biographical material, including photographs, letters and other documents.
