The Crocodile Island on Baiteng Lake to the west of Zhuhai is home to over 1000 animals including three species of crocodile (siamensis crocodile, false gavial and hybridized crocodile) and a number of critically endangered Chinese Alligators. Ostriches, black bears, peacocks, monkeys, camels & snakes round off this unlikely menagerie.
The crocodiles are put to work in various performance fields, where they are trained in entertainments such as ladder-climbing. The handlers are perhaps the real stars: particularly in the crocodile taming shows which sees them hug and even kiss their 4-meter long, 1000 kilo-co-stars.
Pedal boats are available for hire on some of the islands, and visitors are invited to feed the crocodiles in the lake.
