Description

Huashan is one of the five sacred mountains of China. It takes its name (''flower mountain'') from the way in which its five peaks form the shape of a flower. It is the site of a number of influential Taoist monasteries, and is dotted with temples, shrines, ridges, pavilions, terraces, carvings and statues that reflect the Taoist philosophy. Climbing Huashan is a popular activity: visitors are drawn by the cultural significance of the mountain and by the marvelous scenery. However, be aware: although the mountain is not especially high-2160m (7087 ft)- the climb is steep in places and can be troublesome for people who are nervous of heights.

There are several routes up the mountain, all of which eventually reach North Peak. The most popular starts from the village of Huashan and leads along the famous Green Dragon Ridge (canlong feng). A popular choice is to begin this walk before dawn and time it so that you reach East Peak at sunrise before continuing on to North Peak. Those who do not want to make the entire climb to the North Peak on foot have the option of a cable car which will take you most of the way.

Tips: Wear sturdy shoes with good grip in slippery conditions. Take warm clothing and a plastic raincoat: it may be warm when you start, but windy, cold and drizzly on the peak! Take food and water with you.: you can buy meals on the way, but the choice is not good and prices are sky high. Carry a flashlight if climbing at night.
