Originally, the pagoda was built during the Tang Dynasty to house sutras and figurines of Buddha brought back from India by Monk Xuan Zang. The building has since been renovated and rebuilt.

There are a number of archeological and historical relics housed here including steles & posters bearing essays from Emperors Taizong and Gaozong, bronze statues of Buddha painted in gold, a comprehensive photo exhibition explaining the origin of Buddhist pagodas in China and how they were constructed, the history of pagodas and how Indians built them, Steles in the shape of Buddha' s footprint made out of Buddhist scriptures, calligraphy by many poets from the Tang Dynasty, and finally a beautiful panoramic view of the city and its surrounding from the 7th floor. The walls are also decorated with the history of ancient pagodas in Indian and the legend of Wild Goose Pagoda.
